Harajuku is one of the craziest districts of Tokyo when it comes to shopping. I found myself lost in a sea of fabrics, colours, hagglers and sushi. And did I mention the Cat Cafes? So many, so adorable! So when I looked down at this vibrantly bobbly hat, the Harajuku Hat kind of stuck…!
Harajuku is named after Harajuku subway in Tokyo, and is the birth place of this Lolita-meets-cutesy-meets-girly-meets-gothic-meets-colourful style of fashion. Harajuku now pretty much stands for non-conformity and rebelling against strict societal rules and pressure to fit in.
Harajuku is about standing out and being different. It’s everything I tried to incorporate into the design of my somewhat bold hat.
I spent some time in Harajuku last year and fell in love with the quirks and vibrancy of the streets.
Notes:
This hat is written in UK terms with US terms given in the Abbreviations section below.
When stretched the circumferences are as follows: Toddler size = 20″; Child size = 21″; Adult size = 23″. The sizes will be outlined in the pattern in this format: Toddler (Child, Adult)

Abbreviations:
Ch = Chain
St = stitch
Sts = stitches
SlSt = slip stitch
DC = double crochet (US = single crochet)
BLO = Back loop only
BS = bobble stitch. Yarn over and pull through st so that you have three loops on your hook, next yarn over pull through the first TWO loops, yarn over insert hook in same stitch, yarn over pull through first two loops, yarn over insert hook in same stitch, yarn over and pull through first two hoops, yarn over insert hook in same stitch, yarn over and pull through first 2 loops, you should now have 5 loops total, yarn over and pull through all 5 loops.) Do not ch1 at the end.
BSDCtog = bobble stitch and UK double crochet together. Same as BS above but do not complete last yarn over and pull through. With 5 loops on the hook, insert hook into the stitch next to the near-completed bobble, yarn over and pull through. You should now have 6 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops. Do not ch1 at the end. You are decreasing a BS and DC together.
You will need:
- 5.5mm crochet hook (I use a KnitPro Waves hook which you can get here)
- 100-150 yards of Aran weight yarn. I used Big Twist Value Solids in Blush Pink
- Pom Pom- I got mine from Two Little Rainbows but if buying elsewhere, please read this article about fur pom poms before making a purchase.
- Yarn Needle for those pesky ends! (These with big loops for eyes are my favourite add-on EVER!)
