A asked me a good question today: he asked me how I was positioning my blog, as I showcase a local store every month, but also have adverts for online stores. Doesn’t this defeat the purpose of encouraging people to save yarn stores and shop local?

Well, yes and no.

Firstly, yarn shops are brilliant and I encourage people to do what they can to shop at them. However, I understand that some people will find it more challenging to visit a ‘local’ store. Either due to physical constraints, illness or disability, or geographical constraints.

That’s where the online part comes in, as the brands I advertise offer global (and relatively cheap) shipping.

Most yarn shops sell beautiful hand-dyed skeins of yarn that I believe most people should crochet or knit with at least once in their lives. The sheer beauty and skill required to make such magnificent yarn art is something that should be admired.

Similarly, yarn stores more often than not sell more mid-to-high end yarn brands, and I understand that again, these brands may not be affordable to most, and I truly believe that it should not be a blocker to the wonderful art of crochet or knitting.

You sometimes won’t find ‘cheap’ acrylic yarn for a blanket your new born baby is going to puke on from time to time at a yarn store- and you might not want to use that £15 skein of alpaca yarn just yet…I do however encourage those, who are able to, to visit a local store more often, and even support with just one purchase. This is better than not supporting at all.

You can also learn a lot from the expertise offered in-store that you can’t get from using a webpage.

For those who can, I intend to grow this blog into a type of “Yarn Shop Database”, so that when you are on your travels, you can look up a store and visit.

And for those of you who can’t, I advertise brands that I use myself and who I believe to be trustworthy in terms of: appropriate pricing, quality and customer service.

Each month I showcase a store and a list can be found here.

I gain an income from this site by advertising the following brands:

  • Etsy
  • LoveCrafts.comLoveCrafts
  • Hobbycraft

Having Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, I understand that some mornings might be “bed-days”, or “hang around in my dressing gown days”. That is perfectly okay and I will always advocate for self-care.

I also understand as a yarnivore, sometimes a special delivery of squishy-goodness can turn a frown upside down.

But I also love a good knit and natter, and socialising with fellow yarnaholics at my local store over a piece of cake.

It’s all about balance… even the cake.
