After my friend Penney regretted asking her eldest son what he’d like as an end-of-year school prize, she decided the playhouse he’d asked for would have a seaside theme to keep adventures close by throughout the pandemic if another lockdown was to threaten reality once more.

She messaged me and asked for various bits of bunting to decorate the inside with. I used a free pattern by Pink Milk for the triangular bunting. But decided to go freehand with the little beach huts she requested.

This pattern is for 3 different beach huts that you can adapt with your own colours and accessories.

You will need:

Any yarn and hook! This is a great stash-busting exercise. Try making each beach hut with different yarns for different sizes. The hook size you use needs to be something that helps you hook up a reasonably rigid fabric without too many holes.

Notes:

Odd numbered rows are RS rows.
Pattern is written in UK Terms.

For the Horizontal Striped Beach Hut: following the instructions below, change colours starting on Row 2 and work 2 rows in each colour. I.e. Rows 2 & 3 (contrast colour), Rows 4 & 5 (main colour), Rows 6 & 7 (contrast colour), etc. Work these stripes throughout the entire pattern.

Roof

Rejoin a contrasting colour yarn to Row 21 on the WS.

Roof: DC up the edge of the hut towards the point on Row 31. When you get to this point: 3DC in the point. Continue to DC down the edge of the roof of the hut until you reach the opposite side of Row 21. Ch1, turn.

DC over the stitches you just made, when you reach the 3DC cluster you created on the row previous, 3DC into the middle stitch before continuing down. When you reach the end DO NOT FASTEN OFF.

Edging: SlSt into the stitch in the row below so that you are back on the “walls” of the hut. SlSt down the edge of the hut until you reach the corner. 2SlSt in the corner st and then continue along the base of the hut, continually working SlSts until you reach the next corner. 2SlSt in the next corner and then SlSt up the sides of the hut until you reach the roof once more. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Pin this for later!

Door

Ch 8. DC in 2nd Ch from the hook. DC across, ch1 and turn (7sts).

Row 1: DC across, Ch1 and turn (7sts).

Worst Row 1 until Row 13. FO leaving a long tail to sew door on to hut.

When it comes to making your accessories- anything goes! I hand stitched on the little hut bunting, and for the lifebuoy ring, I chained in a circle (as big as I wanted) and then double crocheted inside, before embroidering on the white lines once the circle was attached to the hut.

I’d love to see your finished huts! Make sure to tag me on Instagram and tag #lovealyuk so that I can see all the fun combinations you come up with!
