I promise this will just take an evening at most!

This pattern was made with a little yarn scrap I had left over from making a tree skirt last Christmas. Seemed like the perfect quantity to whip up something quick for A’s niece to open on Christmas morning.

I, personally, LOVE the lemon peel stitch. It gives a great texture and its not a lot of effort. Now that’s what I call minimum investment but maximum return!!!

The stitch pattern is beginner-friendly and can be adapted for anyone! I’ve made several in varying sizes. The trick is to make sure that your foundation chain is made with a hook one size bigger than the rest of the pattern- otherwise you end up with a lot of curve!

This is what happens if you don’t use a hook size bigger for your foundation chain. You end up with a curvy headband!

You will need:

  • 4.5mm crochet hook (I use a KnitPro Waves hook which you can get here)
  • 5mm crochet hook for the foundation chain
  • Any DK Weight yarn. I used Stylecraft Special Aran in Pale Rose. Approximately 25g will suffice- but it depends on how big your head is!
  • Yarn Needle for those pesky ends! (These with big loops for eyes are my favourite add-on EVER!)
  • Scissors (Aren’t these adorable?!)

Lemon Peel Crochet Headband
She loved her extra stocking filler on Christmas morning. The headband was straight on her head! I love how turban-like it looks. Very vintage!

Pattern

Using 5mm hook, Ch multiple of 2 until the chain will wrap tightly around your head with no give (it will stretch as you add more rows so make sure it’s REALLY tight!)

Row 1: DC into 2nd st from hook. Repeat (TC, DC) until you reach the end of the row. Ch 3, turn. Your last st will be a DC.

Row 2: TC into first st (remember Ch3 doesn’t count as a st) then (DC, TC until the end of the row). Ch1, turn. Your last st will be a TC.

Row 3: DC into first st then (TC, DC until the end of the row). Ch3, turn. Your last st will be a DC.

Repeat Rows 2-3 until the headband is desired width. Ending on a Row 2 repeat.

Final row: DC into every stitch across. Fasten off.

Sew up the two shorter sides together- making a circular headband. It doesn’t matter how good or bad your sewing is at this point- or even if its visible, because we’re going to hide this bit with the ribbon in the middle.

Ribbon

Row 1: Ch20. DC into 2nd chain from the hook. (TC, DC) across. Ch3, turn. You will end on a DC.

Row 2: TC into first st. (DC, TC) across. Ch 1, turn. Your last st will be a TC.

Row 3: DC into first st. (TC, DC) across. Ch3, turn. Your last st will be a DC.

Wrap this ribbon around the middle of the headband (to hide the seam) and sew the two short ends of the ribbon together.
