Difficulty:
— Asymmetric triangular shawl worked in rows, with a 7-colour contrasting band in the centre to represent visible light. Surface crochet to mimic the wavelengths. It is an experienced beginner pattern and you will need to know how to increase/decrease and surface crochet.
Yarn Requirements:
— 500 – 700m / 540 – 750 yds DK Yarn in Main Colour (MC)
— 22m / 24yds DK Yarn in each of 7 different colours: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet
— 4mm crochet hook
— For EM Spectrum Shawl ONLY: 5m / 5 yds Aran Yarn in Accent Colour
Hooks:
— 4mm
Gauge:
—4 sts x 3 rows = 1” in pattern.
Other Materials:
— Tapestry needle to weave in ends and seam
— I strongly suggest using stitch markers to help you with stitch placement, particularly to identify the increase/decrease side of the shawl and surface crochet.
This shawl is asymmetric.
Blocking your shawl, as explained within the pattern, will ‘sharpen’ some of the increase and decrease points.
How curved the end result looks depends on how tightly you complete your ch2’s on the increase/decrease side (as explained within the notes section). The more tightly you crochet these ch2’s the harder it will be to block the shawl straight, and a curve will form.
Due to the nature of this stitch, it is stretchy and so end measurements may be different depending on how enthusiastic a blocker you are. All fibres have a certain level of elasticity within them, hence sizing is given as an approximation. In the Finished Size section above, I have given the finished sizes of my prototype shawl both blocked and unblocked but be aware that testers sizes ranged from 65” – 67” inches across after blocking.
Eagle-eyed Scientists!
Yes, you are correct, the rainbow of my spectrum is reversed! As I am offering two patterns, and only had enough yarn to make one shawl, I sacrificed the scientific accuracy of this pattern.
The scientists amongst you will have realised that the rainbow should start with Violet (on the left hand side of the shawl) and progress to the Red side where the longer wavelengths begin. Feel free to make your shawl however you want to, and please forgive my scientific faux-pas! Please be aware: I have not changed the colours within the pattern and they follow my scientific blunder.
