Occasionally I take on commissions, but its not my go-to. But when Laura messaged me asking for a Kiwi blanket for a baby about to be born to a couple from New Zealand – I couldn’t resist the pun!

With this being a baby blanket, I broke my cardinal rule of avoiding acrylic. Unfortunately for baby blankets, it can’t really be avoided. It’s machine-washable which is a must-have for any new parent. Nobody wants to be handwashing a blanket while their baby is screaming! Why am I opposed to acrylic? Check out this post here.

Laura gave me free reign for this blanket so I could go crazy. I chose to use Deramores Studio Baby Soft DK Acrylic Yarn which is incidentally, available in a colour called ‘Kiwi’ so I was sure that the blanket would be the right shade of green, and as I wanted this to be a chunky, cuddly make, I held the yarn double throughout for bonus plush! I also thought that baby would enjoy texture as they grew, and so I added some textural elements so that this wouldn’t be your usual run-of-the-mill baby blanket.

Unfortunately black isn’t seen as a ‘baby’ colour, so the Deramores yarn doesn’t come in a suitable gothic shade for the Kiwi seeds, rather than opting to avoid them, I dove into the stash for some black DK yarn (lets be honest, we all have it!), and used some leftover Stylecraft Special DK. I suggest you use this as a stash-busting opportunity too!

Notes:

  • Pattern is written in UK terms with US terms given in the Abbreviations section above.
  • You will hold the yarn double throughout.
  • Pattern is worked in rounds, in a spiral.
  • Change colours on the final yarn over of the previous stitch.
  • Number of stitches in round is given at the end in (brackets).

Gauge: Gauge isn’t super important so long as there aren’t too many holes for little fingers to get trapped in. However, for reference, I got 11 sts, 4 rows to 10cm, giving a finished blanket diametre of 130cm.

Pin this pattern for later!
