We’re bringing the CAL BACK for 2023!!! All the links and info can be found here with the addition of the following prize draw rules for 2023:

  • Every month we will be drawing a winner to receive a prize for the completion of their finished panel for that month.
  • You may re-submit panels you made in 2020 by posting to Instagram and tagging me @lovealyuk OR posting to the Love, Aly Facebook Group here.
  • The giveaways are open WORLDWIDE.
  • There will be NO NEW PANELS released. This is for fun and you can complete the CAL in any time frame you’d like to.

Welcome to the information pack for the Greenwich Mystery CAL (Crochet-A-Long). Why Greenwich? Following my unofficial theme of naming patterns after places, where more suitable than Greenwich- the home of Greenwich Mean Time- to name a Blanket after when each panel will symbolise the passing of time and key moments and holidays of the year.

This post will be updated often throughout this CAL, so make sure you check it often as it will be referred to when questions are asked.

Please remember that while Crochet is my passion, I have a 9-5 that pays the bills, so I can’t answer every question immediately. Please be assured that I will check in once in awhile throughout the day, but I am busy just like all of you. Our Facebook group is full of a wealth of knowledge in case you get stuck or need any help or advice.

I am not profiting from any of this and I am not sponsored by anyone or any company. I’m doing this purely out of my love of crochet and enjoyment of involving a lot of people in a community atmosphere! However, if you’d like to add to my yarn fund, please check out my Ko-Fi account here.

Sharing

My graphs will be free but please do not share the actual graphs. If someone wants the pattern then please drop them a link to the group or to this blog as the graphs will be released on both.

Share and share and share again! Share away on social media! You can always tag #lovealyuk @lovealyuk, but the official hashtag for this event will be:

#LoveAlyGreenwichCAL

Notes

I use UK terms. However if you are familiar with C2C this shouldn’t effect you.

This is a Corner-to-Corner (C2C) style Crochet-A-Long (CAL). Graphs will be released that can be worked up in the C2C style, as well as mini C2C, bobble, DC, or HTR. It is all personal preference!

I will be working this up in a C2C, but you’ll see a variety of different styles throughout the CAL from other members in the Facebook Group. I will not be making any tutorials because there are so many already about there.

If you are unfamiliar with C2C, here are a few tutorials that are excellent:

Crochet Crowd – Reading Graphs

Tonya Bush – Changing Colours

Bella Coco – How to C2C

I am doing a simple DC border around each square using the same color yarn as the background. (US = SC)

Once the squares are all completed and I am satisfied with my layout, I will be using an invisible join to join them together. Here are two great tutorials for this method:

Colleen Hays – Invisible Join

Blossom Crochet – Invisible Slip Stitch

Schedule

This C2C is a mystery that will be revealed over the course of the year 2020. As previously mentioned, the CAL is named Greenwich thanks to its connotation with time. Each panel will represent a month of the year and as such, I will be giving a defined calendar-layout but feel free to place the squares in whatever order you please as we will be joining them at the end.

One graph will be released every 1st Day of Each Month.

Month-by-Month Colour Breakdown

Please remember that I am doing this along with you, so I do not know how much of each colour is needed. I have added an approximate breakdown of colours for the entire year in a .pdf below.

I tend to use bold, simple colors so finding color substitutes should be fairly easy. I will be using Stylecraft Special DK for the purposes of demonstration – but please use your scraps wherever you can!

Stylecraft Special DK is DK size 3 (light) yarn or 8 ply. Please be mindful that if you use a thicker weight yarn then this will make your blanket bigger (and vice versa)

Squares are only 25×25 pixels, so if you are using Stylecraft and an appropriate hook and doing the C2C method, you should not use an entire skein of one colour on one square. Bobble stitch will use a lot more yarn, as will using a bigger hook.

Use what you love and just try to be consistent with your yarn size.

I will keep a list below of the colours you will need, and they will also be available on each monthly blog post.

Colours will include: Aster, Black, Bright Green, Buttermilk, Camel, Citron, Clematis, Cloud Blue, Copper, Emperor, Fondant, Gold, Jaffa, Kelly Green, Matador, Mocha, Plum, Royal, Sherbet, Silver, Spice, Spring Green, Turquoise, White.
