I was so inspired by the test knit version of the Sea and Sun Skirt made by VeryBaroque (designed by The Marvellous Mrs Maker) that I just *knew* I needed to have my own in exactly the same colours. Isn’t it magnificent that with the same materials and a bit of patience you can re-create someones handiwork with your own two hands?
Anything cerise seems to call to me. It was my grandmother’s favourite colour, and for some reason wearing it makes me feel somehow connected to her. This isn’t my first cerise make but it IS my first skirt- and boy, oh boy, have I learned a few things!
Firstly, prepare yourself for hours and hours of mindless circular knitting. Unlike sweater weather, however, this baby is about 400 stitches around when you get to the widest part. It grows slowly. The waistband and ties were easy peasy and were quick as lightning, but then this became a mindless ‘in front of the TV’ make.
In hindsight, I wish I’d gone down a size. I made a size 4, but even after blocking to size, this baby STRETCHED. I used Juniper Moon Farms in Zooey which is a cotton/linen blend, and while I expected cotton to stretch, I needed to go around the inside of the waist with my crochet hook to tighten this up and avoid any wardrobe mishaps.
Overall, this is a super easy make. After reading VeryBaroque’s test knit notes, I lengthened the ties at the back to 7.5″ before tapering off and this means that I can tie them relatively stress-free and make a double knot.
The yarn itself, after blocking looks a bit matted, and photographs seem to make it look nicer and smoother than it is in reality. It’s rustic- that’s probably the best way to describe it. But nonetheless, this skirt will be a wardrobe staple, especially after dedicating 100+ hours to its creation!
